The right to enter and use the Main Reading Room

The right to use of the reading room belongs to those who are over 18 years old and possess a valid Reader Bulletin. The Reader Bulletin is issued by the National Library of Greece to the readers who need to use the Library, after filing an application form (along with 2 photographs and the proper ID). The Bulletin is issued free of charge, is absolutely personal and is valid for five years. In case the Bulletin is lost, his owner should report to the National Library of Greece, and will be replaced. If it is also lost for second time the National Library of Greece maintains the right not to issue a new one. For cases where the reader uses the Library for research only, or is permanent resident of another city or country, a Provisional authorization of entry is issued. The entry in the reading room is allowed only to those who study material of the Library. The readers are responsible for their personal objects and their personal computers. Books or other material of the National Library of Greece are not allowed to be removed outside the reading rooms. The readers are requested to properly use the library material. They are also requested to report each attrition of book that they have received for reading. At the exit the readers may be asked to open their bag for inspection. The use of cameras, photographic machines and photographic instrument is not allowed in the reading room.

The readers are requested:
· to not mark the books
· to not lean their notepad on the book in order to write
· to read big books and newspapers only at the reading desks.
· not to speak loudly, turn off the mobile telephones, not to bring in foods, liquids, chewing gums, razor blades and scissors.
In case a book is uncut, it can be reported to the responsible employee.
Utility books should be repositioned to their place (perimetrically in the Reading room).
It is notified that cameras monitor all the areas of the reading room and the Library and the books are marked.

The entering procedure

The reader entering the lobby of the National Library of Greece puts his bag in a case and keeps the respective key as long as he is in the National Library of Greece. Those using the Reading room are required to present their valid ID. The reader entering the Reading room, presents his Reader Bulletin or the Provisional Authorization of Entry as well as the Bulletins of Application Forms, selects a numbered place and waits the asked items, which will be delivered after 10΄ to 20΄. When he finishes his study and is to withdraw from the National Library of Greece, he returns the book to the same employee from whom he obtained it and receives the white bulletin signed and stamped, as well as the Reader’s Bulletin. In the lobby he delivers the white Bulletin to the office of reception of entry and receives his bag from the case, leaving the key in the door. In case the reader wishes to study also in the afternoon of the same day or the next day the same book, he delivers appropriate marking on the white bulletin. In the ground floor of the Reading room, general handbooks are available for free access to the readers. The readers of the National Library of Greece owe to handle the books carefully, not to lean notepads or other objects on them, not to write, mark, or tear the pages. Any attempt of misappropriation of books is punished according to relative law provisions.

What our employees can do for you

The reception employee welcomes the new readers, informs them for the use of NLG (orally and with the relative booklets), directs them to other Libraries (if they do not fill the conditions for use of the NLG). He also receives the white bulletin signed and stamped from the outgoing readers and also checks the books and provides the authorization for their photocopying.
The employee of the bibliographic service provides the information on the use of card catalogues, OPAC and Greek National Bibliographies and serves the readers with all kinds of bibliographic help.
The employee that issues the Reader’s Bulletin and Provisional Authorizations checks the information of readers from the police IDs issues the bulletins and the authorizations and manages the computerized file of readers. He also monitors the Reading room via the closed circuit.
The employee in charge of the Reading room (alternative) receives the Bulletins of application of forms as well as the Bulletins of Readers, dispatches the bulletins to the bookstages, delivers books in the readers and manages the daily file. He provides bibliographic service to the readers that are already in the Reading room.
The second employee of the Reading room seeks the books that are found in the two floors in the Reading room, has the responsibility for the old and infrequent books, he guides the readers for free access books (in the ground floor, perimetrically of the room). He also monitors the Reading room via the closed circuit.
Three employees are assigned to serve the Bulletins of applications in book stacks of the 5-floor wing.
Two employees are allocated to the book stack wings of New Literature.
Apart from the above-described work, the whole personnel of the personal Department of Reading room is also charged with the following duties:
· Classify each morning the book stages the books of the previous day, as well as the new material that is received by the Department of Lists. Each employee is allocated a specific part of the book stacks.
· Search and locate the requested books. This search is not simple. If the book is not found in his place in the bookshelf, the research is continued: in the bookshelf of the books of other form, in the file of inventory, in the state of withdrawing, in other places of storage, in the lending file, in the offices of other departments etc.
· Also, the personnel participate in the work of:
- Receipt of new book material, control and classification.
- Preparation for maintenance, bookbinding and digitization.
- Receipt of book material from the micro photo service.

The Service of Bibliographic Information

The Service of Bibliographic Information and service of readers of National Library of Greece is located at the lobby of the Library and is responsible:

  • For the management of service of bibliographic information, including the card catalogues, the databases and other material in printed and digital form.
  • For the guidance of readers in their research in the card catalogues, in the headword directory, in the Bibliographies and in the use of the electronic tools of NLG.
  • For the organized tours in the National Library of Greece.

The use of portable computers

The reader/user of a portable computer can ask from the employee of entry, his wireless connection with the network of National Library of Greece so that he acquires wireless access to the internet, right of reading of electronic magazines of the consortium Heal-Link, as well as searching the OPAC of NLG. The readers should not leave their computers without attendance. The National library of Greece does not bear any responsibility for any losses.
